Justice report shows no progress in generation
Social entrepreneur Denis O'Reilly says he's getting a back to the '80s vibe from the report of the Safe and Effective Justice Advisory Group chaired by former National Party Minister Chester Borrows.
The Black Power life member says he's concerned at the spate of youth gang murders and the response of people like Auckland mayor Phil Goff that the answer is more police, as if nothing has been learned from the failure of 30 years of get tough on crime policies.
The report offers an alternate vision, and in the process quotes from the 1987 inquiry into the penal system by the late Sir Clinton Roper.
"And not one damn thIng has changed. He spotted all of the same things Chester Borrows is so wonderfully articualting. The racism, the whole structure of the penal system, the focus on pathology rather than on potential and what ((US civil rights activist) Angela Davis would call the criminal justice industrial complex,", Mr O'Reilly says.
He fears the Borrows report will end up on the same shelf as the Sir Michael Cullen report calling for a capital gains tax.
