Ministry takes filleting knife to fish limits
Further cuts to the east coast tarakihi catch are being proposed in a bid to bring fish stocks back to a sustainable level.
That's on top of the 20 percent quota cut imposed in October.
It's part of a number of changes to catch limits Fisheries New Zealand is now consulting on over the next two months, including at public meeting and iwi fisheries forums.
The proposals are part of a rolling set of annual reviews.
Fisheries management director Stuart Anderson says the agency has reviewed 13 inshore fish and shellfish stocks and seven deepwater stocks as part of a rolling set of annual reviews.
The reviews could mean catch limits could be increased for some species that are maintaining sustainable levels.
Fisheries NZ also wants to add four species to the list amateur fishing charter vessels must report: snapper, scallops, blue cod and tarakihi.
