Vet turned doc chairs Medical Council
Dr Curtis Walker of Whakatohea and Ngati Porou has been elected chair of the Medical Council.
The former veterinarian retrained in human medicine and qualified from the University of Auckland School of Medicine in 2007.
He works as a renal and general physician at Mid Central District Health Board.
Dr Walker also serves on the board of Te Ohu Rata o Aotearoa – Maori Medical Practitioners Association (Te ORA).
Medical Council chief executive Joan Simon says Dr Walker’s sound experience and strong relationships within the health sector, particularly with Maori communities, will help the Council improve the cultural competence of doctors and address inequities in the health sector.
