Vigils and chains to support shooting victims and survivors
More burials are being held today at Christchurch's Memorial Park Cemetery for victims of Friday's mosque shootings.
Police in Christchurch hope to reopen the Al Noor Mosque in Deans Ave in time for Friday prayer, and people are offering to form a human chain around to protect those inside from any threats.
There was also a ceremony this morning on the steps of parliament where Labour, Green and National MPs were handed a petition with more than 65,000 signatures calling on them to ban all semi-automatic weapons.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has promised to change New Zealand's firearm laws after the terror attack, and Cabinet on Monday agreed to start the process.
Vigils are planned around the country tomorrow to remember the lives taken, including one at the Auckland Domain which organisers expect could draw up to 10,000 people.
At Otago University where a vigil for peace was held at lunchtime, many women wore the hijab as a sign of solidarity with Muslim women.
