Time to check own racism
Greens co-leader Marama Davidson says some Māori need to check their own racism with regards to new migrants, refugees or Muslim people.
She says the Christchurch terror attack did not come out of a vacuum, and she has long dealt with Muslim women who deal with similar casual, daily and systemic racism as Māori face.
The same forces of white supremacism who would destroy Muslim communities would also turn their hate against Māori.
"I do get concerned when I see some of us Māori still feel agrieved at these communities and feel they are to blame for our own colonised oppressions and they are really not and I feel warmed by the manaaki I have seen from Māori leadership and marae and Iwi all around the country who know these are our brothers and sisters, these are our whanaunga," she says.
Marama Davidson will be one of the speakers at tonight’s vigil for Christchruch in the Auckland Domain.
There will be a two minute silence for the victims of the Christchurch terror attacks starting at 1.30pm this afternoon.
It will be preceded by the Muslim Call to Prayer for the Friday congregational prayer, the Jumu'ah, which will be broadcast Friday's service will start with the call to prayer, which will be broadcast nationally across all major free-to-air TV and radio stations from the service being conducted in Hagley Park, opposite the Masjid Al Noor in Deans Ave.
