Government history response more than asked for
The New Zealand History Teachers' Association says the Government has done more than it hoped in requiring schools at all levels to teach New Zealand history from 2022.
Spokesperson Graeme Ball says the government has responded to sustained pressure, and people are ready for the move.
He says it has gone even further than the association had asked for in its Give me my history petition.
"We were quite timid actually I think now in our petition, just calling for some year levels to be included, because we didn't want to spook the horses and ask for too much. So I'm pleasantly surprised at the scope of it, and it's exactly like it should be, it should be infused in our learning programmes throughout the years rather than 'now we're in year 10, let's do the New Zealand stuff,'" Mr Ball says.
