More access to voting good start
A south Auckland local government politician is welcoming the prospect of ballot boxes for general elections in supermarkets and malls.
Justice Minister Andrew Little has announced he is fast tracking some of the recommendations made by the Electoral Commission in its review of the 2017 election, including making voting places more accessible and allowing people to enrol and vote on the same day.
Manurewa Local Board chair Angela Dalton says from contesting local body elections, which are done by postal voting, she can see the importance of people both understanding the need to vote and that it can be easy for them to do so.
"I do some doorknocking the day ballot papers come out for local government and I see letter boxes full of ballot papers laying on the ground and I think we need people to vote because that could absolutely change the direction of a local government or a government," she says.
