One of the contributors to a new resource about Ngati Porou's treaty settlement process says it will be of huge value to current and future generations of school pupils.
The Ministry of Culture and Heritage’s Te Tai Whakaea website will cover a number of tribal histories and treaty settlements with short documentaries and digital resources aimed at tamariki between 12 and 15.
Erana Reedy from Radio Ngāti Porou, whose archives were mined for audio and background material, hopes it will foster a stronger Ngāti Porou nation.
"I wish this had been around 30 years ago when I was at school. We learnt about WWI and WWII but no mention of the Māori battalion let alone Ngāti Porou and it's land grievances," Ms Reedy says
The documentaries were directed by Academy Award winner Taika Waititi, and they’re available from the Heritage New Zealand Manatua Taonga website.
