Tourism Minister Kelvin Davis says he’s hearing from many Māori businesses who are taking up the COVID-19 small business subsidy so they can look after their people.
At the party’s congress on the weekend, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced the cashflow loan scheme had been extended until the end of the year.
So far $1.4 billion has been paid out, with another $4 billion available.
Mr Davis says Māori tourism businesses tell him if they don’t look after their people, they don’t have a business.
“Others say ‘money is the bottom line and making profits is the bottom line,’ but almost 100 per cent of Māori businesses say ‘no, our first priority is to our people, making sure we look after them. If we do that right, the money side will flow on from that. That has been the real essence of how Māori businesses run their operations, looking after their people first,” he says.
