Iwi join Hutt council to tackle housing need
A new Council, Māori NGO and Iwi-led housing partnership was launched today to coincide with the Government’s announcement of Te Maihi o te Whare Māori – a national Māori and Iwi Housing Innovation Framework for Action (MAIHI).
The partnership between Hutt City Council and its Urban Plus subsidiary are teaming up with iwi to build warm, safe and affordable homes.
The partnership with Kahungunu Whānau Services and Te Rūnanganui o Te Ātiawa ties in with the government's new Te Maihi o te Whare Māori a national Māori and iwi housing innovation framework.
Mayor Campbell Barry says the shortage of suitable and affordable housing is the key driver of homelessness.
Māori on lower incomes are disproportionately affected by housing stress.
Te Ātiawa chair Kura Moeahu says the new housing developments will be places that are uniquely Māori and supported by a Māori community housing provider.
