Ngati Te Ata leads Awhitu native replanting
Ngāti Te Ata along with Āwhitu Landcare and Auckland Council are leading a four year project to plant 250,000 native trees on Auckland’s Āwhitu Peninsula.
Te Korowai o Papatūānuku Āwhitu Peninsula Project received almost $1.7 million from the One Billion Trees Fund, administered by Te Uru Rākau – Forestry New Zealand.
Te Uru Rākau acting deputy director general Henry Weston says the aim is to restore native trees and biodiversity and improve waterways.
Between 15 and 20 jobs will be created for propagation, tree planting and maintenance, and Matakawau Community Nursery will increase seedling production from 15,000 to 62,500 stems a year.
The project will include investment into Ngāti Te Ata's cultural landscape restoration activities, supporting kaitaikitanga through a training programme on seed propagation and mātauranga Māori learnings.
