Anglicans turn to wananga for qualification
Te Pīhopatanga o Te Tai Tokerau has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi to include two of its theological papers in the Bachelor of Humanities (Indigenous Studies) programme.
Bishop Te Kitohi Pikaahu says it means students studying to be certified as Anglican ministers can also pick up papers towards a degree.
He says working with a Māori institution was the right fit.
"We essentially wrote our own papers completely, from alpha to omega. There are some obvious and even natural alignments with their programme – for example indigenous studies, environment, even legal studies from an indigenous point of view, which offer another perspective. We're calling it Ngā Tohu Mata a Mihinare, the Anglican qualification," Bishop Pikaahu says.
Bishop Pikaahu says the papers will be open to other students at Awanuiārangi and from outside Te Taitokerau.
