Training body eyes Maori success stories
Te Pukenga, the organisation being set up for the country’s polytechs and vocational training, is looking at ways to boost outcomes for Māori.
Ana Morrison, its deputy chief executive for partnerships and equity, says it has looked at what is working in the existing system and how that can be scaled up across the sector.
The resulting Te Pae Tawhiti Insights Report recommends more co-governance arrangements with hapū and iwi, creating regional collaborations with iwi, and Māori health, social and education providers, and taking holistic approaches to Māori learner success and wellbeing, including through kaupapa Māori services and spaces.
“There’s already been some significant shifts so more Māori in leadership, identifiably in governance. This provides us with a really good platform to go forward, acknowledging that was a self-reflection, so the next piece of work is actually to go out and ask whānau, hapā and iwi how well do they think we are doing and what do they want to see from us,” Ms Morrison says.
The new organisation is set to be fully in place by 2023.
