Powhiri as kiwifruit giant expands footprint
Kiwifruit export company Seeka has been officially welcomed to Ōpōtiki to celebrate its amalgamation with Ōpōtiki Packing and Cool Storage, or OPAC.
Ngāti Ira led the pōhiri supported by other Whakatōhea hapū and the iwi of Te Whānau-a-Apanui, Ngāti Porou and Ngāi Tai.
Seeka chief executive Michael Franks says the $59 million merger deal, which had overwhelming shareholder support from both companies, beings the expanding eastern Bay of Plenty kiwifruit growing region to Seeka’s operations.
He says Seeka’s Māori kiwifruit footprint now exends from Te Tai Tokerau through to Te Moana a Toi and further east to Tūranganui a Kiwa.
