Wahine swears off plastic
Gisborne woman Tina Ngata has set herself the challenge of living for a year without plastic.
She’s tracking her progress on a blog, The Non-Plastic Maori, that will includes an accounting for any unavoidable plastic ontained during the year.
Ms Ngata says seeing a documentary on the mass of plastic collecting in the middle of the Pacific Ocean brought home to her the consequences of excessive reliance on plastic and inspired her to seek alternatives.
She is also inspired by other plastic-free initiatives around the world.
Ms Ngata coordinates the Bachelor of Maori Advancement (Environment) degree at Te Wananga o Aotearoa’s Whirikoka campus.
The challenge includes no purchasing of products that are made of or packaged in plastic, and no accepting gifts of products that are made of or packaged in plastic.
Where there is no alternative, she will weigh the plastic at the end of each month to measure her plastic footprint.
