Sergeant Wayne Panapa receives the Meritorious Service Medal from police commissioner Peter Marshall.
Wayne Panapa and the late Paddy Whiu are among six police staff who have been honoured with a new award for outstanding service and commitment to police and communities.
Sergeant Panapa was one of the first iwi liaison officers and more recently has been leading the training of Maori wardens.
He received his Meritorious Service Medal from police commissioner Peter Marshall yesterday.
The medal fills a gap between existing internal awards and higher royal honours, and only a small number will be given each year.
