Radio awards celebrate diversity
One of the organisers of the second Iwi Radio Awards says it was a great opportunity to emphasis what makes Maori radio different from mainstream or even community radio.
Jacqui Taituha says Saturday’s awards presentation in Rotorua was organised chaos, but the big personalities in the room, including the many politicians who attended made it a great night.
Taranaki station Te Korimako o Taranaki was named station of the year, with the rest of the 17 categories spread amond stations around the company, showing the depth of the network.
She says there was also a lot of interest in the new award for best use of Maori language, named after the late Parekura Horomia, which was won by Tauranga-based Moana FM.
"That is the purpose of Iwi radio, to promote and enhance te reo and even better down in to its intricacies across groups and hapu, communities and all of that. Parekura himself was acknowledged throughout the evening as being one of the main pou who always thought of iwi radio even when he wasnt minister of Maori Affairs he was still a keen supporter of iwi radio and knew how iwi radio could connect to Maori communities in particular", says Jacqui Taituha Station Manager of Maniapoto FM
