More identifying as Maori
Census figures show that Maori continue to have a growing and relatively young population.
The latest release of ethnicity data from the 2013 census shows a 6 percent increase in the number of peole who identified as Maori, making Maori now 15 percent of the total population.
The median age of people who identified as Maori was 23.9, compared with a median age of 40 by the 74 percent who identified as European.
Maori males were 48.2 percent and females 51.8 percent of the total.
Gisborne was the region with the highest percentage of Maori at 48.9 percent, up from 47.3 percent in 2006, followed by Northland at 32.4 percent.
In Auckland the figure was 10.7 percent, down from 11.1 percent in 2006.
The number of New Zealanders born overseas topped a million for the first time, England remained the most common overseas country of birth, with China second, India third replacing Australia..
After Australia came South Africa, Fiji, Samoa, and the Philippines.
