Loss of passion prompts move
Outgoing Labour MP Shane Jones says he no longer has the passion for politics that the party needs.
Mr Jones announced yesterday he is stepping down after nine years in parliament, opening a space for fellow Northlander Kelvin Davis to come back as a list MP.
He says it has been a privilege to be a Labour parliamentarian, but he has done his dash.
The Labour Party needs from people like me 1000 percent commitment and energy and I just didn’t have it in me any longer. I could have soldiered on. I’m 55 this year, and could do another six to nine years, but once I turned down standing again in Tamaki Makaurau I then realised I didn’t have the level of passion the party needs from someone like me," Mr Jones says.
He is considering taking up a new ambassador-level position helping Pacific countries develop their fisheries, but says he also has other opportunities he can consider.
