Korero key to suicide prevention
Maori are being encouraged to talk about their experience of suicide and to learn the signs when whanau may be contemplating it.
A new book from the Mental Health Foundation, Tihei Mauri Ora: Supporting whanau through suicidal distress, offers advice about warning signs and suggests ways to handle a crisis.
Witi Ashby, the foundation’s Maori development manager for suicide prevention information, says Tihei Mauri Ora has been written with extensive consultation with Maori suicide prevention experts, whanau and communities.
He says Maori are disproportionately affected by suicide, and they can struggle to find ways to talk about it.
" It’s around how best to support whanau especially how we can support those ones that are falling in to a bit of difficulty and cant get out of that hole and I think there are alot of services out there that are able to reach out but I think our first port of call is whanau " says Witi Ashby from the Mental Health Foundation
