Iwi continues fight against seabed mining
Te Runanga o Ngati Ruanui has asked the High court if it can join an appeal against a decision to stop Trans Tasman Resources mining ironsand from the seabed off Patea.
Chief executive Debbie Ngarewa-Packer says the iwi believes the Environmental Protection Agency, made the right decision, and it is disappointed the Australian-owned company is appealing.
She says the company was unable to provide robust evidence about the mining impacts and the quarry under the sea they were going to create.
The Environmental Defence Society has also applied to join the appeal in opposition to Trans Tasman, because it says it will be an important test case that will set a binding law on how the Exclusive Economic Zone Act is to be applied.
