Enrolment key to Sykes chance
Internet Mana’s Waiariki candidate launched her election campaign today, but she says a lot of her potential voters aren’t on the roll yet.
Annette Sykes stepped down as Mana president so she could concentrate on winning the seat held by Maori Party leader Te Ururoa Flavell.
The iPredict site puts her only slightly behind, with Labour’s Rawiri Waititi polling in single figures.
Ms Sykes says the team-up with Kim Dotcom’s Internet Party means Mana is getting across to some of the million people who didn’t vote last election, including the third of eligible Waiariki voters who aren’t enrolled.
"Young people are walking up to us saying 'I'm going to vote for you this year whaea, I'v e never voted before,' only because they see the digital economy may be their way to escape low employment, the ailure to be even able to afford education. All of thoser things are I think working in our favour at the moment," she says.
Ms Sykes says many Maori voters drop off the roll because they move to find work or because they can’t afford the rent.
