Holiday highway alternative defended
Labour leader David Cunliffe says there are smarter ways to spend the money earmarked for the holiday highway.
Te Tai Tokerau candidate Kelvin Davis has been chastised by fellow Labour MPs for supporting the Puhoi to Wellsford link.
That was in response to feedback coming out of the electorate that any investment in the north’s infrastructure would be welcomed.
Mr Cunliffe says the problem is the proposed toll road touches the north.
"Labour’s approach is to spend some of the money taking the worst bits out of the road, spend some of it on improving the railway line so we have got a really strong backbone for the north, and then use some of it for making sure that the transport infrastructure at ther Auckland end works too, so I think Labour has a much better, much more consistent, fuller plan than tis ons size fits all that is coming out of the government," Mr Cunliffe says.
