Curriculum charts kura evolution
One of the people designing a new curriculum for kura kaupapa Maori says it will give the sector a platform for consistent performance.
A draft of Te Marautanga o Te Aho Matua was released last week, and it will be refined at pilot kura before being launched officially next March.
Toni Waho from Te Runanganui o Nga Kura Kaupapa Maori o Aotearoa
says the Maori immersion sector is broadly supportive.
He says the curriculum reflects the changes in the 30 years since the first kura kaupapa at Hoani Waititi Marae.
"Our curriculum has been contributed to by the network of kura kaupapa Maori and it's drawing upon those years of experience. Prior to that, nothing. So on the one hand it's been a while but on the other we've needed to have that period of time to allow things to develop and evolve and come together and have some fantastic examples of what is working well for our tamariki," Mr Waho says.
