New structure for Ngai Te Rangi
Taurangamoana iwi Ngai Te Rangi is trying to bring its settlement organisations under a single framework.
Te Runanga o Ngai Te Rangi Iwi Trust, which holds the tribe’s fisheries assets, elects its representatives by marae-based electorates.
Ngai Te Rangi Settlement Trust, which looks after the tribe’s Treaty settlement assets, has hapu-community electorates.
Charlie Tawhiao, who chairs both trusts, says they want to switch the runanga to the hapu-community electorates, so elections for both trusts can be held at the same time.
This will save over $20,000 a year.
The terms of the Maori Fisheries Settlement Act means the fisheries trust must remain separate at this time.
The change will require a 75 percent majority of beneficiaries who vote in a postal vote, which closes on September 26.
