Quality of settlement to be tested
Tuhoe negotiator Tamati Kruger says it’s still too early to judge the quality of the settlement the iwi has reached with the Crown.
Last Friday at Taneatua Treaty Negotiations Minisgter Christopher Finlayson delivered the formal acknowledgement and apology for past treaty breaches including invasion and land confiscation.
Mr Kruger says Tuhoe’s response was to make it clear the peace accord still needs a lot of work.
"We’ll leave it for the next generations to test the waters between now and then, what happens between the Crown and Tuhoe, to see if there is any sincerity and will in there, and we could very well reach a tatau pounamu arrangemernt in time to come, but a bit too early to say it is," he says.
Mr Kruger says the apology was given a physical form by the accompanying return of Rua Kenana’s flag taken from Maungapohatu in 1916.
