Rotorua brings Maori on to council boards
Rotorua District Council is recognising the importance of Maori to the region's economic future in the appointments it is making to transition boards for new council business units.
Mayor Steve Chadwick says the transition boards are a step towards the possible transformation of the units into council-controlled organisations.
Rotorua Contracting, which includes the council’s maintenance and works department, plant nursery and landfill, will be chaired by former Te Puni Kokiri chief executive Leith Comer.
The board includes Te Arawa Group Holdings chief executive Ian Boyd and recruitment and training consultant Israel Hawkins from Ngati Kahungunu, Ngati Tama and Ngati Tuwharetoa descent.
Transition board members for the Destination Rotorua Marketing, Events, i-SITE and Venues business unit include two executives from Te Puia, the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute: CEO Tim Cossar and sales and marketing manager Kiri Atkinson-Crean the co-chair of Maori in Tourism Rotorua.
