Candidate wishes well for Waatea kura
Auckland’s Tamaki Makaurau candidate is endorsing the prospect of a kaupapa Maori Steiner school in south Auckland.
Peeni Henare told Radio Waatea host Willie Jackson, who in his role as CEO of the Manukau Urban Maori Authority is promoting the new partnership school, that he backs initiatives that can be led by whanau and community.
That’s despite Labour’s opposition to publicly-funded private schools.
"Whatever we do in education, we have to have our children, our tamariki at the forefront of everything that we do, not as a result of what we do. So as long as the kaupapa works, and I'm pretty confident that you and the whanau at MUMA are going to do a great, job, the hope is we can all get in there and support regardless of what happens September 20," Mr Henare says.
Meanwhile, the race for Te Tai Tokerau has heated up with the latest Reid Research-Maori Television poll showing Labour’s Kelvin Davis and Mana’s Hone Harawira almost neck and neck on 37 and 38 percent respectively.
