Nga Matua theme for reo week
The Maori Language Commission Te Taura Whiri I te Reo Maori is looking to focus on older speakers in next year’s Maori Language Week.
Chief Executive Glenis Philip-Barbara says the theme will be Whangaihia te reo Maori ki nga Matua.
She says developing the language of parents will establish a firm basis for Maori language development for generations to come.
The campaign will offer advice on the use of Maori language in the home and promote awareness of the benefits of bilingualism and how language transmission occurs.
It will encourage whanau to engage with kaumatua about how te reo Maori was used in the home when they were children.
Te Taura Whiri will also develop 50 phrases over 50 weeks for parents to use, building on this year’s successful ‘Te Kupu o te Wiki’ campaign.
