Officials blocked housing plan
Outgoing Maori Party co-leader Tariana Turia would like to see her party make action on regional development and Maori housing part of the price of supporting the next Government.
She says far more could have been done in the regions to create opportunities for Maori to work.
She also accuses Housing New Zealand officials of sandbagging efforts to shift control of housing assets in Wairoa and Flaxmere to iwi or Maori trusts.
" We had bureaucrats who basically came to my table and said yes yes yes and simply didn't do it and that's hard when you're a minister and you're asking your officials to do particular things and they make out that they are doing it and they're not " she says.
Tariana Turia says it’s an example of the institutions racism that she encountered with a wide range of government agencies who don’t trust Maori or Pasifika people to know what’s best for themselves.
