Alcohol harm mapped to outlets
A Maori health researcher says evidence is growing that the intensification of suburban liquor outlets leads to poor health outcomes.
The Alcohol Regulatory and Licensing Authority has upheld a decision to grant an off-licence for a liquor store opposite Southern Cross Campus in Mangere.
The application was opposed by the Mangere-Otahuhu Local Board and the school, which says it normalises the sale of sugary alcopops to young people
Maori Health Review editor Matire Harwood says the likely impact has been mapped in a new paper by former Canterbury University social scientist Francis Ayuka and others on Neighbourhood availabity of alcohol outlets and hazardous alcohol consumption.
"The more you have alcohol within your environment, such as being sold in local dairies or local liquor outlets, close to schools, within communities, the more likely there will be complications as a result of that like violence, like road traffic accidents, like domestic violence, like alcohol abuse," Dr Harwood says.
