Big money turns race into farce
Former Tai Tokerau MP Dover Samuels says the battle for his old electorate has been turned into a farce by internet mogul Kim Dotcom.
The Northand regional councillor says ordinary voters are upset at MP Hone Harawira's alliance with Mr Dotcom's Internet Party, which could bring John Minto, Laila Harre and Annette Sykes into parliament if the Mana leader retains his seat.
Mr Samuels says when he stood against Mr Harawira, it was about who had the best team and the best policies rather than who had the richest friends.
"This electorate has become important because it is for sale, because big money has come into the electorate of Tai Tokerau. I think it's a farce and it's a put down of the voters not only of Te Tai Tokerau but of Ngapuhi nui tonu," he says.
Labour's candidate Kelvin Davis yesterday won the endorsement of New Zealand First leader Winston Peters to take the seat.
