Rankin seats earn Rankin ire
Fresh from setting his sights on the overthrow of the Maori king, Ngapuhi maverick David Rankin now wants to get rid of Maori MPs.
The Auckland plumber plans a nationwide petition to seek support from Maori voters to end the Maori seats.
He says the seats are patronising, implying Maori needspecial status and have failed to integrate into modern society.
He says fewer than half of Maori voters are now on the Maori roll, and the turn-out in the Maori electorates was the lowest of all the electorates last election.
He could circulate the petition at a hui he has promised next month to discuss the future of the King Movement.
