Taipari highlights hui hypocrisy
The chair of Auckland's Independent Maori Statutory Board says a public meeting about Auckland's unitary plan relied on scaremongering.
The Democracy Action meetng heard from property investor Sir Bob Jones and lawyer and former ACT MP Stephen Franks and called for the end to provisions requiring cultural assessements when developments encroach on areas of significance to mana whenua.
Mr Taipari says the meeting was about reinforcing people's prejudices.
"One of the key questions asked was what was the difference for them protecting Maori heritage and built heritage, because no one was raising issues in that meeting about that, and yet they are the same type of provisions that are required with regards to getting information relating to that site and any activities that are going to affect that site," he says.
David Taipari says iwi are using the mana whenua provision responsibly, and only about 20 of last year's 6000 resource consent applications were declined after consultation with iwi.
