Mahuta run handicapped
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters is dismissing Nanaia Mahuta’s run in Labour’s leadership stakes as an exercise in tokenism.
The former racing minister says putting your name in for the sake of having a Maori or a woman in the race is not good enough.
"So with no disrespect to Nanaia, if you ask her most fervent fan is she serious about standing, the answer is no. So why did she do it? Well she had her reasons for it. That's not good enough, in terms of the need for there to be a strong group of opposition parties that are capable of working and doing things that are important for the country," Mr Peters says.
