PM the croc in chief says Green
Crocodile tears is what Greens co-leader Metiria Turei is calling Prime Minister John Key's new found interest in child poverty.
This week's speech from the throne setting out the Government's third-term agenda promised a continued focus on poverty, especially child poverty.
It also promised to work to ensure vulnerable New Zealanders have access to good quality housing, while at the same time emphasing a shift from state housing to community housing providers.
Ms Turei says from now on she expects Mr Key to do a lot of talking about child poverty without doing anything about it.
"He can't identify or describe any of the real issues that children in poverty face and so he talks about it being a priority but he can't talk about it, he can't describe it because he has no idea of it and he is not making an effrot to find out so we are going to hear a lot about it, but it is going to be false, crocodile tears really," says says.
Ms Turei has picked up the responsibilty for former MP Hone Harawira's feed the kids private members bill.
