Mahuta promising something different
Hauraki Waikato MP Nanaia Mahuta says she will provide a different and unique approach to the Labour leadership.
She says being Maori, a woman and the mother of a young family are positives in her book rather than obstacles.
She says the support for Labour in the election from Maori voters shows the party was doing something right, and she wants to see Labour get ahead.
"This isn’t just about me. This is about the serious challenge ahead of Labour. We have got a lot of work to do. If you were going to put your hand up in a leadership contest, this is probably the toughest time to do it, but I think we cannot do things the way we have always done it, we’ve got to do it differently and be committed to a different approach, and that is why I am putting my hand up," she says.
Even if Nanaia Mahuta doesn’t get enough votes from her caucus colleagues, party members and affiliates to win, her performance at the 14 hustings meetings over the next month could enhance her chances of becoming deputy.
