Fox fears Maori worse off under spy bill
The Maori Party is urging people to make submissions on a bill that will give the Security Intelligence Service licence to spy on New Zealanders for up to 48 hours without a warrant.
The Countering Terrorism Fighters Legislation Bill will also allow cancellation of passports of people believed to be linked to terrorist groups.
MP Marama Fox says the Maori Party is unhappy with the way the Government is rushing the bill through, and has reserved the right to vote against it in the final stages.
"We have examples all over the place of – structural discrimination is the nice way of saying institutionalised racism, and so we know the people who will probably be most adversely affected by these changes will be Maori people, so we don’t support that part of the bill. What we did want to allow was that time was given to have other people also add their voice of concern to this bill," she says.
Submissions must be in by today and will be heard by the select committee before the bill is reported back next Tuesday.
