Bumper crop of scholarships
Growing Maori participation in the health sector is sparking a greater demand for Hauora Maori scholarships.
Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says this year a record 728 students received the Health Ministry-funded scholarships, which were set up in 2000 to build the Maori health workforce capacity.
Scholarships range from $1700 for students in areas such as nursing or physiotherapy, up to $4200 for medical and dental students.
Applicants are judged on their academic achievement, work experience and commitment to Maori health.
Dr Coleman says more Maori are involved in decision-making and health service delivery, which is vital to delivering appropriate and effective services for Maori.
This year the top John McLeod Scholarships and Te Apa Mareikura Awards of $10,000 each went to medical students Laine Marsh and Anika Tiplady, and postgraduate students Ricky Bell and Rachel Brown.
