Flavell backing Glenn Report recommendations
The Maori Party is backing recommendations made in the People's Blueprint report on family violence released by the Glenn Inquiry today.
The inquiry called for judges in domestic violence cases to become European-style inquisitors who can question everyone involved to determine the truth.
It also wants a new dedicated family violence agency to make sure people carry out court orders such as requirements to attend non-violence programmes.
Maori Party co-leader Te Ururoa Flavell endorsed the call for the Government to provide visible leadership on family violence by appointing a dedicated Family Violence Minister.
He also supports new alcohol laws including raising the legal drinking age to 20.
He says the report aligns well with the recommendations of the Expert Advisory Group on Family Violence established by former Minister, Tariana Turia, to identify practical solutions to address and prevent family violence.
