Ngai Tahu plans for 2050
Ngai Tahu whanui have been challenged to think out to 2050.
Kaiwhakahaere Sir Mark Solomon told last weekend’s hui a tau that the iwi had prepared a robust vision to take it to 2025.
That’s only 10 years away, and it’s time to consider what the world might look like for future generations and what the tribe needs to achieve for them.
He says the runanga is confident it will be able to report solid delivery on the 2025 aspirations, especially in the areas of culture and identity, environment, education, whanau wellbeing and development of the tribe’s constituent Papatipu runanga.
The hui a tau was hosted by West Coast hapu Ngati Waewae at its new whare tupuna at Arahura northeast of Hokitika.
Tuhuru has taken four years to build at a cost of over $5 million.
Its external carvings are painted green and the tekoteko is carved from solid pounamu.
It’s the first dedicated marae in the district since a house at Arahura was demolished in the 1930s.
