Stand made against violence
Te Tai Tokerau MP Kelvin Davis is urging men to take a stand on ending family violence.
Mr Davis officially became Labour’s spokesperson on sexual and domestic violence in yesterday’s allocation of shadow portfolios.
He says while it’s often portrayed as a Maori and Pacific Island problem, it is in fact a plague that affects all ethnicities and socioeconomic layers.
He says men should take advantage of White Ribbon Day today and recite the pledge that they do not condone or remain silent about violence against women.
" It takes a lot of courage to stand up to people in certain situations. And I think it is just a way for all men to say, yes, we love our mothers and our sisters and our wives and our daughters too much, to allow violence to continue against them " he says.
Kelvin Davis spent the morning at Wellington Railway Station handing out white ribbons to commuters.
