Tikanga driving anti-violence effort
One of the founders of the White Ribbon motorcyle ride says Maori have the answers within themselves for violence.
Jack Paki from Tauranga's Super Maori Fullas says a highlight of this year's ride was attending the E Tu Whanau family day in Kaitaia at the weekend.
He says E Tu Whanau has been working within tikanga Maori to combat domestic violence since 2008, and it has the right approach of focusing not just on violence but on lifestyles and helping people to develop their potential.
"We're all busy, or especially those in Wellington, looking for new solutions to this violence problem, but it's all about being tino Maori, practicing those values that our tupuna put into us and those things that we hold dearly to us so it's about tikanga and there's a right way of doing things. That's why we are supporting E Tu Whanau and bolstering or strengthening the families," Mr Paki says.
