Boost for study on skin infection
A study into skin and soft tissue infections that disproportionately affect Maori and Pacific children has been picked up for funding by the Auckland Medical Research Foundation.
Dr Mark Hobbs from the Centre for Longitudinal Research at the University of Auckland wants to determine the relative contribution of social, economic, ethnic, environmental, genetic and microbiological factors to the incidence of the infections in children aged less than 5 years.
He will identify which children in the Growing Up in New Zealand study cohort of were admitted to hospital with a skin or soft tissue infection. He will compare them to other children in the cohort, which numbers over 6000.
Dr Hobbs says the results will provide new knowledge to guide future efforts to reduce the incidence of such infections in New Zealand children.
