Groser hostility in letter
Greens co-leader Metiria Turei says a letter from Climate Change Minister Tim Groser to the Iwi Leaders group shows National’s deep hostility to Maori concerns.
Mr Groser told the iwi leaders to rein in their representative, Chris Karamea Insley, who has articulated Maori concerns, that the Government’s approach to emissions trading has cost Maori landowners and post-settlement iwi hundreds of millions of dollars.
Ms Turei says it’s a government that doesn’t accept criticism from Maori.
"This is what this Government is like with all sorts of organisations but Maori in particular, they consider us people who need to do as we are told, to be thankful for the largesse they dole out. There is a lot of talk about Chris Finlayson and how awesome he is over his treaty settlements. Actually, he is just running the same government line. He just uses prettier words to do it. There is nothing about this government that is responsive to Maori issues. They’re deeply hostile" she says,
