SI university backing Northland development
Lincoln University is teaming up with Northland College to run a forestry course in Kaikohe.
Murray Jamieson, who chairs the college’s farm committee as well as being Lincoln’s principal farms advisor, says it will allow students to prepare for a forestry career without having to leave school.
Rather than just labouring skills, it will also foster potential managers and leaders in the field.
Mr Jamieson says forestry is a major part of the Northland economy and there is a need for a skilled, well trained labour force.
Lincoln vice chancellor Andrew West says forestry training will build on the momentum achieved in training young Maori in dairying.
The university intends to develop similar courses in sheep and beef farming, horticulture, aquaculture and tourism.
The University and Northland College formed the Northland Educational Hub to support the teaching of agriculture in the school and the learning pathway from the College into tertiary education through Lincoln.
