Heritage park around Marsden Cross
The country’s newest heritage park is now open.
Ngati Torohina and Ngapuhi yesterday welcomed manuhiri for the opening of the Rangihoua Heritage Park surrounding the Bay of Islands cove where Reverend Samuel Marsden delivered the first Christian sermon in Aotearoa 200 years ago.
The 46ha park was opened yesterday by Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae.
It’s the result of a collaboration between the iwi, the Marsden Cross Trust Board, the Anglican Church, and the Department of Conservation.
Also opened was a new visitor facility on the path leading down to the Marsden Cross Memorial, which has been standing on the site since 1907.
Rore Kahu or soaring eagle was designed by architect Pip Cheshire and features a fiberglass roof suspended over rammed earth wall.
