Technology lays open language
World-leading technology may soon help a generation of young learners pick up te reo Maori.
Kiwi Digital has launched the fourth of its Nga Atua Maori series.
Business development director Steven Renata says by animating graphic novels about the Maori demigods, they hope to reach a new audience of digital natives.
He says buried under the screen is a lot of smart software, including Kiwa’s swipe to read function.
"When the user runs their finger across the text, the app will actually read out the words at that speed. Tap on a single word and it will say that word, and by double-tapping it will pronounce the word letter by letter, regardless of language," Mr Renata says.
Nga Atua Maori comes in both Maori and English, but the technology can be used for any language.
