Inequality driving Labour vision
Labour leader Andrew Little says New Zealand needs to do a better job of sharing the benefits of economic growth.
Mr Little spelled out his prescription for the nation in a speech in Auckland yesterday that was criticised for lack of detail.
But he told Radio Waatea the differences will be fleshed out over the next two years, and what’s important is people see there is an alternative.
He says under current policy setting some are doing well from growth and others are being left behind.
"It absolutely sticks in my craw that we have growing numbers of children now living below the poverty line not because their parents are on benefits. It's working parents, working families now in households where they are below the poverty line. That's just criminal and not something we should accept in New Zealand. It's not something I am prepared to accept," Mr Little says.
Labour’s priorities this year are the needs of small businesses, housing affordability, Auckland transport, and developing a 21st century manufacturing sector.
