Prime race prospect as Mike Sabin quits
New Zealand First MP Pita Paraone says the party will have to weigh up carefully whether it stands a candidate in the Northland by-election.
National’s Mike Sabin today resigned as a member of Parliament, throwing the seat open.
The former policeman, who Prime Minister John Key picked to chair Parliament's law and order select committee, has been under pressure since the election over reports he was being investigated by police for alleged assault.
In a brief statement he said he was resigning because of personal issues that were best dealt with outside Parliament.
